DISTRICT COURT

-

A District Court judge has imposed a fine of € 1,500 on a driver who didn’t have insurance.

Judge Cormac Dunne also told the defendant, Sasha McDonagh of 27 Cranmore Drive that he was lucky he wasn’t getting a suspended sentence also.

The defendant was further banned from driving for four years.

McDonagh admitted a charge of driving without insurance at Pearse Road on February 25th.

Judge Dunne said the defendant had a road traffic conviction history of a serious nature and he didn’t accept his insructions to his solicitor that he held a bona fide view he that he was covered on the occasion.

Ms Cliona Maguire, solicitor ( defending) said the defendant thought he was covered and handed in a letter from an insurance company. However, Judge Dunne said the letter regarding the switching of cover on vehicles was “meaningless.”

The defendant didn’t have insurance on the date, he said.

Ms Maguire said the defendant wasn’t working at present and was hoping to return to the UK to seek employment there next month. Judge Dunne said he was imposing a fine of € 1,500 to reflect the significant road traffic history of the defendant.

“You’re lucky you are not getting a suspended sentence,” Judge Dunne said.
