CLOONACOOL native Lisa Maloney has been selected as Sligo’s new hopeful at the Rose of Tralee this year.

The 24 year old secondary school teacher took home the prestigious sash after 14 local ladies took to the stage at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sligo last weekend in a bid to represent Sligo at the famous festival this August.

Speaking to the Sligo Champion just days after the Sunday night selection, the Sligo Rose said that she was still on ‘ cloud nine’.

“It was an amazing night and I had to idea that my name would be called.

“I was thinking that any one of the girls would have made a great Sligo Rose.”

Lisa is sponsored by the Old Fair Day in Tubbercurry, originally from Cloonacool she is a secondary school teacher in Grange and the school and students showed her great support on the night.

Looking back over the experience she is excited for the next stage of the competition that will hopefully take her to Tralee something that she has longed since she was a young girl.

“I always wanted to be in the Rose of Tralee from a young age.

“Overall I would definitely recommend the experience to anyone who is interested. It has been one of the best experiences of my life.” she added.

She said that she is looking forward to the next year as the Sligo Rose, and said that she has become close friends with the other 13 Roses following the month long preparation and tour.

“I know I have gained thirteen new lifelong friends and I’m so happy to have gotten the opportunity to get to know each and every one of them.”

Lisa will be one of 65 national and international Roses entering the dome this August.
