GSS claim open cup in thrilling encounter

-

GSS claimed the Open Cup crown in the Sligo Rovers astro league on Thursday last, after defeating Sheffield Thursday 2- 0. Both sides came into the game on the back of very positive seasons, with Sheffield Thursday finishing third in the premier division, while GSS claimed the runners up spot in the championship division. The opening ten minutes of the game proved quite tight, as neither side were willing to commit numbers forward in the search of the opening goal. However 20 minutes into the game, GSS were rewarded a corner. Terry Farrelly rose highest to send a bullet of a header into the back of the Sheffield net. This was Farrelly’s third goal in two games for GSS, despite him being a centre half. GSS took a 1- 0 lead into the half time break. The start of the second half witnessed Sheffield Thursday turn up the tempo of the game and they enjoyed a healthy ten minutes of dominance. However they let themselves down in the final third, and were sometimes forced into long ranged efforts which rarely threatened Noel O’ Donnell in the GSS goal. Time was running out for Sheffield Thursday as they went in search for a piece of silver wear in their maiden season in the league. GSS spurned chance after chance in the closing ten minutes to seal the cup which included a missed penalty from Brendan Lowry. However as Sheffield Thursday went in search of a late equaliser, GSS broke on the counter attack and sealed a 2- 0 victory courtesy of Brendan Lowry and ensured GSS would be crowned Open Cup 2017 champions. This week sees all eyes on the semi finals of the Emmett O’Connor memorial Cup, which is the last competition of the season.
