-

A national school kickboxing student from Rathlee in west Sligo has qualified for the Irish National Team in the upcoming WAKO European Championships in Hungary. Mairéad Doherty, daughter of Gerard and Maggie from Caltra, Culleens, is a pupil of Rathlee N. S.

Mairéad, pictured inset, recently took part in the qualifiers where she had four fights, two in Light Contact on the Saturday, in City West Hotel, Dublin, in which she came first. On the following day she came second in the Point Fighting competition, which, she said, was the hardest fight for her. The result of this was that she qualified for the Irish team. All at Rathlee National School are so proud of Mairéad’s achievement and wish her well in the upcoming World Championships in Hungary this summer.
