The Sligo Champion

Somers takes victory in popular Carney 10k

- BY DAVID KEARINS

The Carney Lissadell 10k Road Race on Easter Monday attracted 214 participants and it has become one of the cornerstones of the athletics’ calendar of North Sligo in recent years.

The scenic route runs through the majestic Lissadell Estate and this year it saw Sligo AC’s Seamus Somers tasting success for the first time after coming close over the last few years.

Somers and North Leitrim’s Liam Feely ran as a pair from the starting line in Carney. However, around the 8K mark, Somers opened up an unassailable lead and held on for a notable victory in a PB of 33: 18 with Feely finishing second in 33: 34. Tír Chonaill AC’s Ronan Matthews was 3rd in 34: 27. Sligo AC’s Damien Kennedy had his second PB in eight days with his 35: 54 earning him 7th place.

It was a good weekend for Sligo AC runners. Audrey Colreavy followed up Friday’s Grange 5K win with a victory in the Senior Ladies’ Race with a great PB of 39: 43.

Well done also to Gerry Gilmartin who edged close to the magic sub 40 mark with his 40: 35 while John Nicholson ran 41: 49.

John Scanlon ran 44: 24 with wife Annette Scanlon not far behind with her 46: 44. Brendan McCarrick, on his third race of the weekend following the Grange 5K and Kilmovee10K, rounded off the long weekend on a high with his PB of 47: 02.
