Augustine McCawley, Geevagh, and formerly Coolmurla, Geevagh passed away peacefully on the same day as his neighbour, Mrs Annie Sweeney. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Geevagh on Monday and burial followed in Kilmactranny Cemetery.
Augustine, who was in his 90’ s was a quiet, unassuming man and well read. Evidence of this can be found if we go back 80 years when as a pupil of Geevagh N. S. he contributed several stories to the National Folklore Collection.
Among the gifts brought to the altar during the Offertory was a radio and a book of Yeats’ poetry. Without doubt, his interest in Yeats’ work was influenced by his uncle Pat McDonagh who was a friend of Yeats, and it was he who introduced Yeats to the university of Notre Dame.
Augustine was a very good speaker as gaeilge and many of a certain age will have memories of him introducing election candidates outside the church when it was the done thing to canvass support after Mass.
He is survived by his cousins, their families and friends. May he rest in peace.
