YOUNG STEPHEN
North Leitrim’s Splodar Theatre presents Young Stephen an adaptation of ‘ Portrait of the artist as a young man’ by James Joyce.
Adapted and directed by Prin Duignan. Performed by Patrick McEneaney. Splodar’s popular play returns to Manorhamilton for two shows on this Wednesday, April 26, at 6 p. m. and 8 p. m. before going to Belfast to be performed at the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival.
Young Stephen, from Joyce’s semi autobiographical novel, examines the early life of Stephen Dedalus. Stephen’s young and idyllic life is turned around as he spends his first term at boarding school.
McEneaney’s depiction of Joyce as a young man follows Stephen from isolation and loneliness to a new sense of freedom. On his return home he finds a household torn down the middle due the political turmoil caused by the fallout from the revelation of Charles Stewart Parnell’s affair with Kitty O’Shea.
On the 100 anniversary of Joyce’s novel McEneaney’s highly energetic performance, expertly weaves through the characters and stories of young Stephens formative years.
