Benwiskin Centre shortliste­d for ‘ Get Involved’ Awards

BROADCASTE­R and environmen­talist Duncan Stewart is coming to judge Benwiskin Community Centre in Ballintril­lick this week after they made it to the finals of the nationwide ‘ Get Involved’ Awards.

The Community Garden Project is run by Ballintril­lick Environmen­tal Group who were shortliste­d from 32 entries from around the country.

The group are The Sligo Champion’s nominee to the annual ‘ Get Involved’ awards run by Sustainabl­e Energy Authority of Ireland.

“We’re delighted,” said Centre Manager Jackie Warnock. “This is only one of many initiative­s running here,” she said.

The centre joins five other finalists: Skibbereen Sensory Garden in conjunctio­n with Southern Star, Cloughjord­an Wetlands with the Nenagh Guardian, Revamp furniture Longford, with the Longford Leader, Broadford Trails with the Limerick Leader and North Leitrim NEC and Seamus Dunbar in conjunctio­n with the Leitirm Observer.

The next state involves the judging panel, chaired by Duncan Stewart, visiting each project on Thursday/ Friday 4th/ 5thMay. Each project will also be filmed during the on- site judging process.

The Benwiskin Centre is competing for prizes of € 5,000, € 1,500 or € 500 and a Community Energy Champion prize of € 3,000. The awards will take place on 11th May in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchards­town.
