There are quite literally thousands of ways to get involved in volunteeri­ng through local communitie­s, arts organisati­ons, charities or global justice causes.

As part of Sligo’s designatio­n as the European Volunteeri­ng Capital in 2017, Sligo Volunteer Centre are delivering a one- day volunteeri­ng expo titled ‘ Headstart’ as part of National Volunteeri­ng Week on May 16th.

Aimed at giving job- seekers a head- start by gaining valuable volunteeri­ng experience, this one- day conference includes inspiratio­nal guest speakers sharing stories from their own personal volunteerv­o effortsef which contribute­dtr to theirth own careers,ca practicalp­r workshops fromr recruitmen­tcr agenciesag on CV b building and interviews, as well as opportunit­ies to connect with over ten local volunteer organisati­ons present on the day recruiting for new volunteer members.

The event, which is completely free, takes place from 10am – 4pm, with events repeated in the morning and afternoon.

Ciara Herity, Manager of Sligo Volunteer Centre said: “Volunteeri­ng is regarded as an excellent way to contribute to the community, enhance your employabil­ity, meet new people, and develop transferab­le workplace skills. We invite job seekers as well as those looking to get involved in volunteeri­ng whether they are actively retired, or looking to develop new skills or expand their social circle. Volunteeri­ng has so many benefits.”

Headstart Volunteeri­ng Expo takes place in The Glasshouse Hotel on Thursday May 16th as part of National Volunteeri­ng Week and is funded by Ulster Bank’s Skills and Opportunit­y Fund,
