A point from full forward Stephen KIlcoyne with the last kick of the game saw the home side overcome a battling St Molaise Gaels side at KIlcoyne Park on Saturday evening last in the 5th round of the Senior League.

The result was rough justice on a visiting side that overcame the concession of two second half goals to battle back level two occasions before KIlcoyne’s late score.

Despite playing against a strong first half breeze the home side led by 0- 06 to 0- 04 at the interval.

It was Alan McLoughlin at full forward for Gaels who hit the games first score in the 3rd minute but the home side responded with points from Darragh Kilcoyne and Brian Curran. Paddy McGowan who tuned in another impressive display at midfield for Gaels brought the sides level but CIan GIlmartin, Darragh and Stephen Kilcoyne all contributed first half points for the home side before two Alan McLoughlin points completed the first half scoring.

Gaels lost James Brennan and Dara Elliott to injury during that first period.

An early Colm Clancy point set the tone for the second period and Peter Wilson also found the target early in the second period while the home side responded through Darrah KIlcoyne to lead by 0- 07 to 0- 06 after forty two minutes. Then a misplaced ball was picked up by Daniel Maye who set Stephen Kilcoyne free behind the Gaels’ defence. KIlcoyne’s initial effort rattled the crossbar but before the Gael’s defence could clear the Tubber player slotted the ball past Robbie Kelly to the net. St Molaise Gaels responded superbly led by captain Mark Quinn who kicked a great point and two frees from Alan McLoughlin and by the fifty fourth minute had reduced the margin to one point. Pushing for an equaliser the visitors were caught on the break and Brian Murphy was allowed to solo forward before placing a fine shot to the corner of the net to put the home side ahead by 2- 07 to 0- 09 and the points appeared to be secured for the home side. However Gaels responded brilliantly and Cathal Burns and John Gilsennan kicked fine points from play before two frees from Alan McLoughlin brought the visitors level and a division of the spoils appeared likely. But with time just up a final effort from the home side saw Stephen Kilcoyne kick a point from thirty metres out to secure the win for the home side. Best for Tubbercurry were Stephen Kilcoyne, Cian GIlmartin and Daniel Maye. Gaels best performers were Tommy Kennedy, Mark Quinn, Paddy McGowan and Alan McLoughlin.
