COOLERA/ STRANDHILL

CONNACHT Championship BEST wishes to our club man Keelan Cawley this weekend when he lines out for Sligo in the Connacht Championship tie against New York. We wish him every success, and hopefully the result will mean we will see our other representative Niall Murphy be fit for a Connacht semi- final. JUNIOR Girls ROUND three of the league saw the girls travel to Skreen to play St. Pat’s. It was the first time that some of the more senior players took to the pitch this year, with Jacqui Mulligan making her debut for the club. Ultimately, this was a game of missed opportunities, but we can take solace from the fact that goal chances were created and on another day may well have been converted. Other positives can be taken from this game too, notably the performance of Jacqui Mulligan at centre back who brought an energy an intensity to the team that lifted others around her. MUSICAL Treat 2017 OUR annual Musical Treat takes place on Sunday May 21st at 7.30pm in Star of the Sea church, Ransboro. This year we are delighted to have Eurovision winner Charlie McGettigan, Eleanor Shanley, Kieran Quinn and Sandy Kelly providing the entertainment, as well as some exciting young local talent. Tickets are just € 15.00 and are available from committee members. UNDER 16 Boys OUR u16 boys played round 4 of the league away to Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool on Monday 24 May. Our boys, despite missing some regulars battled well but ultimately the concession of goals before half time proved costly. Our next game is at home to Curry on Monday 8 May at 7pm. UNDER 12 Girls THE under 12 girls had a very successful week, playing two matches, winning both. The girls then travelled to Grange on Friday to play the unbeaten Molaise Gaels. This victory guaranteed top spot in the group with one game left, and means that the girls will compete in the A League quarter final. MINOR Boys OUR minor side played away to local rivals St. Mary’s on Thursday evening. In what was a keenly contested match, we came out victorious on a score line of 2- 6 to 1- 8. With 22 players available for selection it was a real team effort that got us over the line against our neighbours. Next up is Geevagh/ St. Michaels on Thursday at 7pm in Ransboro Park. UNDER 16 Girls THE under 16 girls travelled to Curry last Tuesday for round four of the league. Though trailing 2- 01 to 1- 02 at half time, our scores coming from Beibhinn Harte ( 1- 01) and Lauren Donaghy ( 0- 01), the girls put in a strong second half to eventually win by 2- 07 to 2- 05. The final group game is against Geevagh on May 9th where victory would see the girls qualify for the league final.

ST JOHN’S

UNDER Age Coaching UNTIL July 6th on each Saturday football coaching will be provided by qualified coaches from 10.00 to 11.30 on the Cleveragh GAA pitch ( Opposite the Sports Complex ). Club members must reside in the Parishes of St Annes or Carraroe which is the club area irrespective of which Primary School the child attends. SENIOR Football THE St Johns- Burns Skoda sponsored- Division 2 League team campaign continued on Saturday evening when Castleconnor were the visitors to Stenson Park in Round 5 and with both sides level on 6 points it was essential that our boys came out on top in the battle for promotion. In very windy conditions, St Johns got off to a great start and went 8 points up before Castleconnor got on the scoreboard. By half time the home team led by 0- 12 to 0- 3. The visitors, with the aid of the breeze in the second half, came more into the game clocked up some good scores, mainly from frees, before St Johns got back on track to run out winners on a 0- 19 to 1- 10 scoreline. The next League fixture is on 27/ 28th May away to Easkey in Round 6. We send best wishes to Charlie Harrison and the Sligo seniors when they take on New York in the Connacht championship on Sunday next in Gaelic Park. For some St Johns supporters loyalties will be divided for the game as our clubman Eoin Flanagan will be part of the New York line- up against his former comrades on this occasion. The game will be broadcast live on RTE radio on Sunday evening. The Div. 4 league is due to commence on May 13th with an away fixture V Calry- St Josephs, followed by a home game V Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point on May 20th. There are further fixtures scheduled for June 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. The Minor team had their second Div 3 fixture when they welcomed Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point as visitors to Stenson Park last Thursday evening and our lads came out on top on a 7- 4 to 3- 4 scoreline after a fine team performance in which they played some very attractive football. The next fixture for our boys is on Thurs May 11th at home to Castleconnor. UNDER 16 Football ST Johns had a great victory over Owenmore Gaels in their Div 3 league game in Stenson Park on a scoreline of 3- 12 to 1- 9. Their next fixture is on Mon May 8th against Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point in Oxfield Park at 7.00 UNDER 14 Football OUR U14 team, sponsored by K and D Construction, have their next Div. 2 League game away to Tourlestrane on Friday next May 5th with a 7.00 throw- in. Hopefully they will get back on the winning track again. The Under 12 girls team took on the challenge of Coolera/ Strandhill in a cold and windy Ransboro Park on Mon last and were defeated by 7 scores to 5. On Friday evening they also lost out when they played a strong Drumcliffe- Rosses Point outfit and the scoreline was 12 scores to 3. Despite these losses the standard of play continues to improve and the future looks bright for this group. The under 12 boys teams took on visitors St Molaise Gaels in Stenson Park in their Div. 1 and 3 league games and unfortunately both of our teams suffered defeats. In Div 1 the score was 0- 14 to 0- 19 and in Div. 3 the score was 0- 6 to 0- 17. Both of our teams showed improved performances against strong St. Molaise sides, so hopefully this will continue for the remaining fixtures in the League. The under 8s and 10s had a great evenings football in Riverstown and on Wed 3rd they are away to Owenmore Gaels in Connolly Park, Collooney ( access past Cecil’s Centra supermarket ) with a 7.00 starting time. Best Wishes to Mark and Holly on their wedding day next weekend. DRUMCLIFFE/ ROSSES POINT THIS is a big week for our senior club captain Neil Ewing as he prepares to lead Sligo out in the Big Apple this weekend against New York in the preliminary round of the Connacht Senior Football Championship. The match is live on RTÉ Radio on Sunday evening ( May 7th) from 8: 15pm. We wish Neil and all our club supporters who are travelling Stateside an enjoyable and ( hopefully) successful trip. Our senior men’s footballers suffered another defeat in Division 1, going down to Coolaney/ Mullinabreena at Cloonacool on Saturday evening on a final scoreline of 0- 16 to 3- 4. We remain second from bottom in the table after five matches. The league takes a break for a few weeks now. The seniors have Kiernan Cup game against Eastern Harps in two weeks’ time. The ladies intermediate footballers were beaten by Eastern Harps in Division 2 last Friday evening at Oxfield. While Harps deserved their win, the match was much closer than the final scoreline ( 2- 8 to 8- 6) suggests. This was the team’s first league defeat of the season. They can still reach the league final with victory in their remaining round robin match v Tourlestrane. The club is proud to have four representatives on the Sligo minor ladies panel which plays Mayo this week in the Connacht minor ‘ B’ championship final. The four are: Jayne McCormack, Michelle McNamara, Sinéad Regan and Kate Keyes. Our girls U16 footballers were beaten 3- 11 to 1- 8 by an impressive St Farnan’s team in Division 1 last week. We can still reach the play- offs if we get a result in our concluding league game against Tourlestrane on May 9th. The 14 girls entertain Eastern Harps this Tuesday evening ( May 2nd) in Oxfield at 7pm while, two days later ( Thurs 4th), the girls U12 footballers host Calry/ St Joseph’s at Oxfield in the league at 7pm. The boys minor footballers were beaten by St John’s in Division 3 of the league 7- 7 to 3- 4 last Thursday. They travel to St Brendan’s Park to play league leaders Castleconnor this Thursday 4th. The boys U14 footballers play Ballymote/ Bunninadden in the league on Friday evening in Oxfield at 7pm. Fresh from their recent Sligo Féile final success, the Benbulben Gaels continued their unbeaten run in the U14 league with a comprehensive 5- 13 to 2- 1 victory over Naomh Eoin last Thursday. Among the highlights of the match were two fantastic catches by Eoin Kerrigan and a brilliant save by goalkeeper Conor Donaghy. The U12 hurlers are at home to Tourlestrane in the league this Tuesday evening at 7. Thanks to all the U8 and U10 footballers who took part in last Wednesday’s fun blitz with Coolera/ Strandhill in Ransboro - and to the parents for their support.

ST FARNAN’S

ST. Farnan’s / St. Pat’s under 16 team continued its winning form with another victory over Castleconnor on Monday last. The final score was St. Farnan’s / St. Pat’s 1- 15, Castleconnor 1- 5. The minor team suffered their first defeat in the B league to top of the table Tourlestrane on Tuesday last. The final score was Tourlestrane 6- 9, St. Farnan’s 2- 11. St. Farnan’s started well and half way through the first half had a four point lead, 1- 5 to 1- 1. It was Tourlestrane who finished the half better following two consecutive goals to lead 3- 6 to 1- 6 at the break. Two more quick goals after the break for Tourlestrane all but sealed victory for them. St. Farnan’s worked hard to reduce the lead with good work from all. The team will play Coolaney/ Mullinabreena in the next round. The under 12 team had no luck on Tuesday against Enniscrone/ Kilglass. The under 8/ 10’ s also played the same opposition on Wednesday. The under 14 team play Coolaney/ Mullinabreena on Friday at 7 pm in Templeboy. On Thursday the under 12 team had a very worthwhile training session with Tommy Kelly of Sligo G. A. A. Thanks to Tommy for his attendance and work with the boys. The intermediate team enjoyed another win in the league over Bunninadden on Saturday in Templeboy by 1- 15 to 1- 9. The sides traded points for the first ten minutes before St. Farnan’s took the lead and from then held it to the final whistle. At half time we held a five point lead, 1- 8 to 0- 6. After the break St. Farnan’s got the first three points before Bunninadden got their goal. It wasn’t enough as the home side continued to add more points to ensure victory. There were good performances all round. Good luck to Patrick O’Connor and Sligo against New York on Sunday next. Our senior team defeated Drumcliffe on saturday evening in Cloonacool, despite missing a number of regular players, the full time score was 0- 16 to 3- 4. The U. 12 team play Calry / St. Josephs on Tuesday 9th may at 7pm, in Hazelwood. The best of luck to the Sligo senior panel who play New York next weekend. MENS division 2 result: Owenmore Gaels 2- 10 Easkey 2- 11 The senior men reached the midpoint of the league with a narrow defeat to Easkey. A battling second half fell just short with Brian Mahon outstanding in leading a comeback effort, aided by Peter Wynne. There is a break for a few weeks where we will look to get some injured players back to fitness. Serious work to be done to recover on the league resumption with us now fighting for our division 2 lives.
