Council to call on Harris not to pass ownership of NMH to Sisters of Charity

-

SLIGO County has agreed to call on Health Minister Simon Harris to rescind his decision to pass ownership of the State- funded National Maternity Hospital to the religious order, the Sisters of Charity.

It’s on foot of a motion tabled by Cllr Chris MacManus. He told this month’s Council meeting held yesterday ( Monday) that Minister Harris must now stand by Government commitments made during a debate in the Dáil last week. “There are many options open to the Government if they show a bit of backbone. And that includes a compulsory purchase order,” he said. “There should be no non- medical influence,” he said. Cllr Gino O’Boyle said he was “dumbfounded” that ownership was going to be given to a religious order who “essentially tortured women and their babies.”
