New ‘ Readers Haven’ library opens for St. John’s residents

-

A new ‘ Readers Haven’ library at St John’s Hospital Sligo was officially opened last Tuesday.

The idea for the library originated from a Hospital Book club on the Curam unit in St John’s which involved residents and some staff.

A competition was held to decide on the name for the new library with names being suggested by residents and their families.

The winning name revealed at the opening ‘ Readers Haven’ was suggested by Margaret Mc Brien a resident at the hospital.

Margaret said: ‘ I’m overjoyed that my suggestion was chosen.

“This is our library and I have no doubt it will continue to grow and expand and be enjoyed by all here present for many years to come.”

The books available cover a wide range of topics as requested by residents and have been sourced mostly from donations from staff, residents and their families.

Local authors have pledged their support for the project have agreed to do book readings and reviews.

Sligo Library attended the opening ceremony to show their support for the initiative and will also deliver books to the ‘ Readers Haven’ Library.

The books will include large print and audio books to facilitate easier reading for residents.

St John’s is also hoping the National Council for the Blind in Ireland ( NCBI) will get on board to support the initiative for those residents with visual impairments.
