Hotel row with her partner led to an assault on manager

-

A 27- year- old woman has been ordered to pay € 500 to a charity after she admitted assaulting a hotel manager following a row with her partner.

Before the court was Edel Doherty of Clara, Isle of Doagh, Donegal who admitted assaulting Natalia Michalik on November 12th last at the Clarion Hotel.

Ms Michalik told the court she was the duty manager and became aware of a fight outside between a man and a woman. She went to assist the woman who was crying but she became very abusive and aggressive.

The defendant hit her in the chest and she fell over. Witness said she was struck at least three times by Doherty.

Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor ( defending) said the defendant wished to apologise profusely for what happened which was completely out of character. She and her partner had come down to Sligo for the week- end and went into town to celebrate her birthday. There was a row with her boyfriend outside the hotel and “it proceeded from there.” She didn’t have any recollection of the events. She worked part- time in a coffee shop.

Being in court was humiliating for her, added Mr McGovern.

“It was meant to be a happy week- end away with her partner in the hotel,” said Mr McGovern.

Judge Kevin Kilrane said it appears to have been a case of too much alcohol with “probably another substance to along with it.”

She had fought with everyone including the Gardaí and she was as ashamed as she should be,” he said.

The Judge said he would give her a chance and strike out the matter if she paid € 500 for a charity on May 25th next.

“I hope you have the good sense to take this chance. This kind of nonsense cannot be tolerated,” he said.
