Sligo success at Community Games
Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool are All- Ireland champions!
The Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool under- 13 girls futsal team became All- Ireland champions recently as they took the national community games title at Abbotstown in Dublin.
The south Sligo girls firstly saw off the challenge of Carlow on penalties before sailing to the top spot with a superb 7- 1 mauling of Limerick.
The semi- final was a tense affair which ended with the side going in 1- 1 after extra time.
The Sligo champions winning it on a penalty shoot out.
Tubber/ Cloonacool goalkeeper Macayla Burke refused to be beaten in the shootout, saving all the penalties dispatched by the Carlow champions.
This meant that successful penalties from both Emer Hunt and Ellen Kelleher was enough to send the Sligo representatives through to the final to play Limerick. The final turned out to be a one- sided encounter. The girls in red turned on the style and were simply unstoppable.
Emer Hunt bagged a sensational hat- trick in the first half with Tubber/ Cloonacool leading 5- 1 at the break.
A solid display by the girls in the second half was required. Two more goals were added to their tally to see them take the cup in thrilling fashion with a 7- 1 win.
This was a great achievement by this young team, following on from their under- 12 seven- a- side soccer All- Ireland gold the year previous.
The parish of Cloonacool/ Tubbercurry and indeed county Sligo was represented magnificently by this young team and their coaches Brian King and Mairead Davey.
There was further national success for Sligo sides with the St Mary’s tag rugby team taking bronze in their category. While both St Mary’s boys and girls swim squad took silver at under 16 level.
In the same parish, Danielle Farrell took gold in under- 14 freestyle.
