New playground opens its gates after a successful campaign

-

After months of anticipation the playground in Tubbercurry has finally opened its gates to all the boys and girls in the area.

Last Saturday the 12th May the playground was officially ready for use, with a new layout and equipment including a wheel- chair friendly roundabout.

Originally due to open on the May Bank Holiday weekend, the opening was pushed back to allow equipment and grass to settle. Deirdre Brennan, a member of the Tubbercurry Playground group said it was ‘ relief ’ that the playground was finally up and running.

The name of the play- ground was chosen by 11- year old, Niamh Keyes who chose ‘ Friendship Park’ along with the Irish translation ’ Páirc Cairdeas’. “There is great excitement in the community and it is the talk of the whole town. It is amazing all the hard work that has been put in” said Deirdre.

“It will be great to drive by and see kids finally being able to play in it.”

The playground was originally closed in 2013 due to health and safety issues.

The Action Group was formed more than 18 months ago in a bid to raise much needed funds for the park.

It secured funding for the playground through the Town & Village Renewal Scheme and CLÁR, a rural development programme.

The South Sligo Community Park on Mountain Road, Tubberucrry officially opened their new Astro- turf pitch last Wednesday 10th May.
