25TH ANNIVERSAR­Y CELEBRATIO­NS

You may be aware that the Benwiskin Centre has been in business for almost 17 years but Ballintril­lick Environmen­tal Group, the steering group behind the Benwiskin Centre and the Gleniff Barytes Mill Site, are celebratin­g their 25th anniversar­y this year. Back in March 1992, nine people formed Ballintril­lick Environmen­tal Group when concerns were raised about the high levels of illegal dumping in the scenic area of Ballintril­lick, North Sligo. A ‘ clean- up’ day was organised for March 19, 1992, which mobilised local interest and support which became an annual event that has been running for 25 years. To celebrate this milestone, Ballintril­lick Environmen­tal Group are hosting a range of events throughout 2017. Events held already include the 25th annual cleanup, an anniversar­y card game and a get- together for all past and current board members. For other upcoming events, see below.

GLENIFF HORSESHOE WALK

Join us for a walk around the panoramic Gleniff Horseshoe on Sunday, June 11. You will be issued with a ‘ certificat­e of participat­ion’ in our anniversar­y year followed by refreshmen­ts back at the Benwiskin Centre. Registrati­on fee € 5. Further details to follow.

SUMMER SOCIAL – MUSIC BY THE LAKELANDER­S

The Lakelander­s will provide the music for Ballintril­lick Environmen­tal Group’s summer social at the Benwiskin Centre on Friday, June 16. Music from 10.30p – 1 p. m. Entrance fee € 7. Supper provided.

Presentati­on by Gerry Foley, local historian, on the history of the Gleniff Barytes Mines and Mill site in the Gleniff Horseshoe. Event as part of ‘ National Heritage Week’ – Sunday, August 27
