The Sligo Champion

Rowers in Lough Rynn

-

SLIGO Rowing Club once again loaded their trailer to make the relatively short trip to Lough Rynn Co. Leitrim to race on the 2000 metre 8 lane professionally laid Olympic standard course at the weekend.

A total of 40 clubs from around the country attended the event with more than 500 boats racing across the numerous categories.

Sligo had eight crews racing on the day where again there were many good individual and crew performances.

Glenn Patterson unfortunately was narrowly beaten in a seven boat final in the intermediate single sculls while the women’s club 1 coxed quad of bow Erin O’ Connor, 2 Eleanor Burke ,3 Anya Raftery, Stroke Roisin Walsh and cox Angus Carter showed great improvement.

The day however belonged to the Boys’ Junior 15 coxed quad where their dedication to their training programme both on the water and in the gym over the winter months finally paid much deserved dividends with the crew winning their first pot and taking some big scalps in so doing beating clubs of significant rowing pedigree.

The win however came as no surprise to the club and to the coaching staff of Tom Colsh, Molua Donohoe, Rory Clarke, Ray Murtagh and Huw James as this crew came close on previous outings. They are clearly improving at every training session under the stewardship of Tom and Molua. The young crew expertly stroked by Andrew Waters took the lead off the start and held off the ensuing efforts of Athlone BC, Saint Josephs of Galway, Portadown and Blackrock as they approached the enclosure to win by half a length in a hard fought and exciting finish which can only stand to this crew as it continues to race through the regatta season.

The club is happy to announce that they have taken delivery of their new racing single which is to called Beezie Gallagher after “The lady of the lake” who lived on cottage island and who daily rowed the very same stretch of water upon which Sligo Rowing Club now trains on in Doorly Park.

The next regatta which the club will attend will be Blessington Regatta with Sligo Rowing Club hosting its own regatta on Saturday July 29th.
