Hats off to graduates at Northside Centre

-

The first graduates of the Sligo Latch- on programme were presented with their certificates by Cathaoirleach Hubert Keaney at a recent ceremony in the Northside Community Centre, Forthill, Sligo.

Latch- On is a Literacy and Technology Hands- On programme which originated in Queensland and the teaching methods are based on the way in which young Adults with Down Syndrome learn literacy and other skills to further develop their potential.

It is licensed to Down Syndrome Ireland and is run by the parents and guardians of the students through their local branches.

The programme runs across the country but has been running in Sligo since 2015.

“A lot of work has gone into this programme,” explained Catherine Hannon who is the current Leader of the LatchOn programme in Sligo.

When the initial two years are completed, students can decide themselves whether they want to do add on years or not.

“We had ten students in the programme, and we have one teacher and two tutors per ten students,” she added.

The programme took place at the Northside Community Centre. There were classes every Monday and Tuesday during the school term from9.30am to 3.30pm.

“The graduation was a wonderful celebration of the achievements of the ten students. It was a fun- filled evening for everyone.
