Looking for the grave of Bryan McDonogh

-

Dear Editor,

I am trying to find the grave of Bryan McDonogh, my four times great grandfather, on my mother’s side.

He died in the town of Boyle, Co. Roscommon, on 24th December 1817.

He owned an estate in Doobeg, Co. Sligo, and left bequests in his will to the parish priests of the Sligo parishes of Buninadden and Kilmactranny.

He bequeathed his estate to his son Augustus and appointed his relative, Andrew McDonogh of Boyle, as Trustee.

Bryan McDonogh joined the Navy as a surgeon’smate in 1790. In 1795 he became medical officer and secretary at the British Consulate in Tripoli, Lybia, and assumed the post of ‘ acting consul’ on the death of the then consul.

In 1800 he was appointed Portuguese Consul at Tripoli. Sometime after 1807 he retired to Malta and returned to Ireland around 1810.

He married Teresa Leone from Rome ( believed to have died in Paris).

They had two children, Elizabeth, born 12th December 1808, and Augustus. Elizabethmarried John Brenan, owner of the Phoe- nix Brewery, in 1831.

Archivists in the Roscommon, Caitlín Brown, and Sligo Libraries, Malachy Gillen, and the Timoney Research Archaeologists in Keash, Co. Sligo, have been most supportive but have failed to discover McDonogh’s grave or any local connections about this widely- travelledman.

If anyone has seen it or knows where it might be, could they please get in touch. Many thanks, Deborah Singmaster, 87, Rodenhurst Road,

London SW4 8AF.
