Parents concern over litter near playschool
PARENTS using the pre- school at the MCR community centre have complained about the on- going issue of illegal dumping close by the facility.
The problem of rubbish at this lane way off Mail Coach Road has been highlighted on numerous occasions by The Sligo Champion.
In recent months following the reports, Sligo County Council set about clearing the site but despite signs warning of cameras, fly- tipping has persisted.
One concerned mother called the newspaper last Wednesday morning to say the rubbish has ‘ got out of control.’
Mary Kelly from Mail Coach Road was dropping her son off at pre- school when she was confronted with a mound of rubbish. She says: “It was really bad this morning. Access to the pre- school is partially blocked with all this rubbish in the way. The pre- school is at the back of the community centre. The lane way beside it is full of rubbish. There are boulders one end of the lane way and rubbish the other end.”
Mary stresses: “It is very concerning. Those doing the dumping have got so blatant. It is a continuous problem at this stage. I would be concerned about rats.
“We should not have to see this when dropping our children to preschool. Everyone noticed this morning that it was exceptionally dirty. Bins are thrown around everywhere, there are bags strewn all over the place.”
A spokesperson for Sligo County Council said yesterday ( Monday): “Sligo County Council is monitoring the situation in relation to the littering at MCR Hall and will be taking appropriate action to address the problem.
“The Council can confirm that it is using covert surveillance systems in certain areas to identify those responsible for illegal dumping.”
