Swimmers win Minor League
THE Co Sligo Swimming Club ( CSSC) were worthy winners of the South West Minor League Swimming Cup 2017 recently.
In addition the club won three team plaques for the highest accumulated points for swimmers in the aged 9 and under, 10 years, and 12 years age groups, as well as several freestyle and IM relay winners.
To achieve this result, individual Sligo swimmers performed consistently well for their team over the five gala league which took place over the Spring season.
The league included Marlins of Ballyshannon, Lakelanders of Enniskillen, Strule Dolphins of Omagh, East Cavan and Sligo swim clubs.
Sligo entered the finals with a strong 76 point team lead, but faced a tough challenge from Marlins of Ballyshannon who were 2016 cup winners.
The Sligo team were delighted to bring home a selection of individual medals from the finals, highlighting the strong up and coming talent in the club.
The South West Minor League is a cross border tournament which encourages young swimmers to develop their racing skills and gain gala experience.
Fondly known as the Northern League, it has operated for many years, with Sligo consistently performing well and winning the cup on a regular basis.
The individual medal- winners for 2017 in stroke/ age order are:
Backstroke: Kyra McNulty, silver and Lily O’Grady bronze, 9 yrs and under; Jane Bradley gold, 10yrs; Hannah Fortune and Aaron Platt bronze, 11 yrs; Ryan Gillen silver, 12 yrs; Eabha Moyles, silver and Kyle McNulty bronze in 13yrs age group.
Breaststroke: Daniel Gillen, gold in 9 yrs and under; Liadan Ruddy, silver and Ronan O’Conor, bronze in 10yrs age group; Ryan Gillen, gold in 12 yrs; Leonardo Donandoni, bronze in 13yrs age group.
Butterfly: Mark Bradley, silver and Daniel Rhattigan, gold in 9 yrs and under; Jane Bradley, silver and Eamonn O’Mahony bronze in 10yrs age group; Sean Keane, bronze and Kayle Wajzczuk, gold in 12 yrs age group; Kyle McNulty bronze in 13 yrs age group.
Freestyle: Matthew O’Grady, silver in 9 yrs and under age group; Liadan Ruddy, gold and Anna O’Connor, silver and Ronan O’Connor, silver in 10yrs category; Aaron Platt, silver in 11 yrs age group; Kyle Wajzczuk, gold in 12 yrs; and Leonardo Donadoni, bronze in 13 yrs age group.
Mixed Relays Sligo Winners: Freestyle Silver medal for team 9 years and under; Freestyle Gold medal for 10 years age group; Freestyle Silver medal for 12 years age group; IM Bronze medal for team 9 years and under; IM Gold medal for team 10 years; IM Gold medal for team 12 years.
