Athletics round- up as Sligo runners compete in races

RUNNERS are spoiled for choice with two good quality races coming up in early June.

The Cliffoney 8k will take place on Friday next the 2nd of June and the Maugherow 10k with be held the following Saturday week 10th June .

The Cliffoney race is now in its third year and its popularity is growing each year.

It is held on a relatively flat course on quiet roads near the North Sligo village, it is a race not to be missed by running enthusiast­s.

The Maugherow 10k is a long establishe­d race which is famous for its after race tea and buns etc, its scenic route around by Roughly Head draws walkers and runners from a wide area and it has a good prize structure of individual and team prizes.

Sligo AC athletes were competing in both the Donegal and Foxford 5k events at the weekend.

The Donegal 5K took place in hot conditions on Friday on an out and back testing course.

Sligo AC’s Ultan McNasser was the overall winner in 17: 18 with Michael Murphy ( Ferbane AC) second in 17: 46.

Alan Kearins ( Sligo AC) was 3rd with 18: 28 and Jason McMorrow ( Sligo AC) 4th, and 1st M40, with 18: 38 to make it a worthwhile trip for the Sligo athletes.

The first race in Mayo AC 2017 5k Series took place in Foxford on Tuesday.

Great running from Richard Gorman ( Sligo AC) who was the first to finish in 15: 52, just five seconds ahead of Sean McLaughlin ( Westport AC). The busy season continues this weekend.
