Demolition of Curry Parochial House is appealed

-

CURRY Parochial House should be protected and left for local generations to come to look at and learn from.

That’s according to Mr John Gallagher who has appealed Sligo County Council’s decision to allow the house be demolished by the Board of Management of Curry National School to make way for a new car park.

Mr Gallagher argues that the Parochial House is of historical importance as it has been the principal place of residence of Roman Catholic Clergy from 1879/ 1882 until recently.

“The main building reflects the expenditure provided in monetary contributions by the parishioners of Curry and Moylough,” he said.

The House is on an elevated site overlooking the village of Curry next to the N17. Mr Gallagher says “at least six other buildings, including the Old National School built in 1884 have been demolished in the last 20 years.”

He told An Bord Pleanála that “this part of Sligo has very few surviving buildings dating back to the 1880’ s.”

Mr Gallagher said he appreciates the need for traffic safety and says a project mentioned in the Curry Mini- plan would allow parents and buses to drop children at St Mary’s Community Centre car park, relieve any need for parking at the National School. A decision is due by September 11th. Pic
