Carbury are Yeats Cup champs
CARBURY BALLISODARE 6 3
CARBURY FC started their quest for silverware on August the 21st 2016 when they defeated Ballymote Celtic in the Frank Kennedy Memorial Cup curtain raiser. They went on to lift the Sligo Great Southern Hotel Super League lifting the trophy in Celtic Park Boyle. This was their final game of the season the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa Ballincar W B Yeats Cup final their opponents Ballisodare United standing between them and the treble.
Carbury started the brightest playing at a very high tempo and they opened the scoring on 27 minutes.
Leading scorer Dylan Edwards broke on the left- hand side, powered his way into the penalty area and drove a great effort low past the Ballisodare net minder Gavin Phelan. Keith Carty nearly made it 2- 0 three minutes later but Gavin Phelan pulled off a brilliant save that kept Ballisodare in the hunt.
Carbury had in skipper John Gaffney and Damien Shannon two superb defenders flanked on either side by Keelan Kennoy and Johnny Lynch and they were in formidable mode winning everything.
Carbury, despite their dominance, were still not finding the goals any easier to come by despite the prompting of Lee Marshall, Colm Jinks and Gary Finan. While the back four of Ballisodare, Niall Howley, Michael Casey, Rickey McMunn and Kevin O Hara, worked their socks off to keep Carbury at bay, Keith Gilmartin, Dermot McLoughlin and Simon Gilmartin were in the engine room at midfield and so Carbury had only one goal to show for it.
The second half got under way with Ballisodare again on the quest for that precious goal.
Adam Mc Goldrick who replaced Nathan Hargadon at the break was making some great runs down the wing and causing problems for Carbury. Twelve minutes into the second half and Ballisodare substituted Simon Gilmartin for Daren Somers this added height and pace to the frontline for Ballisodare.
However, expectations were short lived when two minutes later referee Stephen Fallon pointed to the penalty spot for a rash challenge by Rickey Mc Munn.
Ex Ballisodare United player Ibrahim Savage stepped up to take the penalty against his old club and he made no mistake rifling home the spot kick and Carbury were two goals ahead.
The game looked over but full credit to Ballisodare they never gave up and 18 minutes from time Adam Mc Goldrick hit a block buster of a shot that Carbury keeper Danny O’Leary pushed away only for the ever alert Darragh Healy to rocket home a great goal for to give Ballisodare some hope. Carbury replaced Lee Marshall with David Adams 12 minutes from time to bolster up the midfield and with ten minutes remaining Dylan Edwards broke down the left wing crossed the ball into the Carbury danger zone and Gary Finan with the most delicate of touches flatfooted the Ballisodare net minder and Carbury were back in the driving seat. But there was still more to come three minutes later and Dylan Edwards made it four to Carbury. Next Ballisodare United were awarded a penalty and Darragh Healy gave Danny O Leary in the Carbury goals no chance with a lethal finish. Still more excitement in the dying minutes Man of The Match Dylan Edwards grabbed his hat trick to score Carbury’s fifth goal and yes Ballisodare hit back again this time a cracking finish from Andrew Patton.
But the final twist in the tale fell to hit man Dylan Edwards who raced through on goal to bring his personal tally to four goals in a remarkable final that ended up 6- 3 in favour of the Radisson Blu & Spa Hotel Ballincar W B Yeats Cup Champions Carbury FC. TThe Cup and presentations were made immediately after the game by Nancy Pyl manager Radisson Blu & Spa Hotel Ballincar Sligo.
