The Sligo Champion

Caolán Irwin is king of the mountain at Cadwell Park

-

CAOLÁN Irwin took another impressive Supersport 600 win at the latest rounds of his British Championship at Cadwell Park over the bank holiday weekend on his Oasis Bar Letterkenny and Clean Rubber backed Yamaha R6, with a lights to flag victory.

The Irwin brothers headed to Croft on a high following some fine performances at the Masters in Mondello Park just a few weeks ago, where Rhys set a new Lightweight Supersport lap record on his way to a hat- trick of wins and Caolán won two Supersport Cup races from three starts.

Caolán known for his rocket starts, lined up for his Supersport 600 Elite races along side hot competition on the front line of the grid, took an instant lead following a perfect holeshot getaway, battled from the front taking the win in one of the most hotly fought races of the season so far.

Younger brother Rhys 15, the baby of the RRV 450cc Championship in his maiden year continued his fantastic run of form qualifying third fastest in his class.

He held second to the flag to pick up his fifth runner- up position in succession going on to replicate this result over the weekend with a total of three podium finishes and third place overall in the Championship.

The teens thanked their sponsors James Gallagher of Oasis Bar Letterkenny and Clean Rubber Sligo/ Donegal for their financial backing. They also thanked team mechanics Wesley and Graham Regan of Clean Rubber Sligo/ Donegal for their continued work getting to grips with the new bikes and for their expert advice on tyre selection for the very difficult changing track conditions.

Irwin Racing will now take a break for almost a month as Rhys sits his Junior Cert exams, so fingers crossed for him and all the third year students at Loreto Convent Milford.

The team will be back in action at the end of June in the next round of the Championship at Mallory Park.
