The Sligo Champion

ST. MARY’S

-

ANOTHER week and another trophy from the girls’ teams! This time our U12’ s won their league decider against Calry- St Josephs by 5 Points in a fantastic match that was a credit to both sides. Tara Breheny as captain led her girls with distinction and everyone on the squad played and were magnificent. THE U14 girls hosted Owenmore Gaels last Tuesday evening. The first quarter was an even contest, then, our girls took control with some well taken scores to lead 1- 7 to 0- 1 at the break. In the 2nd half our girls defended well to limit the opposition’s chances with Eden Rooney marshalling the defence. Our final tally is 4- 14. The final group game for the U14’ s is away to St Michael’s on 13th June. Tuesday evening also saw the U12 boys take on Coolera in Divisions 1 and 3. Our Division 1 side were always on top. The Division 3 team gave their best showing of the season with a very good win over the same opposition, and Mark Tracey, Patrick Murphy and Evan Gormley were the pick of our players. Our U10s welcomed local rivals Coolera on Friday evening to Kent Park. The 2017 Clifford Cup was played on Saturday and despite some morning rain, conditions were ideal and encouraged good football throughout the competition. Our u12 A team opened the competition with a game against tournament favourites and Dublin kingpins Kilmacud Crokes. In the game of the tournament, 2 late scores saw Kilmacud win a game of high quality. A defeat to Boyle would have knocked out St Marys but a blitz of early scores saw us run out comfortable winners. Our last group match again was characterised by a strong start against Castlebar Mitchells but we let them back in the game and were fortunate to win by 3 scores. The semi final was against Westport. We won playing outstanding football. The final against Kilmacud was another high quality affair with a quick start from the Dubs leaving St Marys struggling. We were only a score down and hopes were high for a famous victory. However a few early missed chances in 2nd half were costly as Kilmacud tacked on some scores on the counter to see them worthy champions by 7- 2. Our adult teams had no luck this weekend, with our Junior side losing to a stronger Tourlestrane outfit by 1- 16 to 1- 06 and the Seniors going down to Drumcliffe- Rosses Point on a scoreline of 17 points to 1- 09. WELL done to Comhaltas on getting the Gig Rig to return to Stephen’s Street Carpark on last weekend. Great music from an impressive line- up made for 2 highly enjoyable evenings. GOOD luck to all our young people starting the Leaving or Junior Certificate this week and we wish each person every success in their exams.
