Cramped conditions for Gardai

- By SORCHA CROWLEY

CONDITIONS in Tubbercurry Garda station are so cramped Gardai have to eat their lunch standing up.

That’s according to Sligo County Councillor Jerry Lundy who called on the Council to put more pressure on the OPW to provide a new Garda station for the town.

“A lady had to be interviewed outside - there’s no privacy. It’s too small for the second town of the county.

“The OPW are dragging their feet on this,” he said.

“The station is too small and it’s not functioning properly. They have no office or canteen,” he said.

Cllr Margaret Gormley supported his motion and said while she welcomed the extra Gardai they also now needed extra accommodation.

“It’s time whoever is making the decision to get off their butt and make the decision. We owe it to the people of Tubbercurry,” she said.

Cllr Dara Mulvey said he would “keep up the pressure on that this work is carried out.”

Cllr Paul Taylor said it was a “major issue” in Tubbercurry at the moment.

“It’s such a fine town and one of the most populated in Sligo.

“t’s so small they’re uncomfortable if there’s two or three Gardai in there,” he said.
