Manorhamilton is a ‘ great place to live’ says Harkin at event
“THIS town holds so many good memories for me as it was here that I came to experience what community really means and how community action could change things for the better.”
This was the core of the message delivered by Independent MEP Marian Harkin when she officially opened the Bank of Ireland sponsored Manorhamilton Enterprise Town event last Friday, June 9th.
Sketching her background in Manorhamilton she referred to the twelve years living there with her late husband Sean. He had a business in the town where their sons James and John were born. She told the audience: “Before that I have fond memories of my many visits to my grandparents and relatives at Shanvaus, Lurganboy and Manorhamilton. “Manorhamilton was and is special,” she said. “We see how farming and agri- food helps to sustain rural families, how local business creates and supports employment and how the people of Manorhamilton and North Leitrim have built a community that is inclusive, supportive and welcoming.”
She praised the involvement of the many participants in events across a range of enterprises from the Gospel Choir to safety in the home and from sport to fashion shows.
She concluded by congratulating Bank of Ireland Manager Rita Rouse for their initiative in creating the Enterprise Towns project and thanked her for the honour of opening the event in a town to which she had such strong attachments.
