Leaving Cert maths paper ‘ challenging’ for students

-

WITH some exacting questions this year’s Leaving Cert Maths Paper One would have challenged many students.

Analysing the paper, Studyclix Expert Teacher and Founder of theMathsTutor. ie Eamonn Toland said: “The paper was mostly straightforward although there are a few testing elements.

“Overall a reasonable paper that with a few interesting twists for the high fliers to show off.”

“Question 4, about a science experiment, is probably the trickiest real world scenario question in the paper, even though it is not part of the Concepts and Skills section.

“Quite a wordy question which tested students’ ability to apply their knowledge of exponentials and geometric series.”

“Question 8 is a nice financial maths question with a scenario about the perils of credit card debt. It does however have a happy ending as the credit union saves the day with a loan!

“There was some controversy last year when financial maths was largely ignored so this question should make up for that.”

Studyclix Expert Teacher and Founder of theMathsTutor. ie Eamonn Toland said Ordinary Level Maths Paper 1 was a straightforward paper for students.

“This is a very straightforward paper and any well prepared student should have had no difficulties. Indeed a lot of this paper would not be out of place on a Junior Cert exam paper. It’s so hard to find anything difficult on this paper that it makes us wonder if the examiners were trying to play it safe after various controversies in recent years.

“Real world topics included forensic science, a tiling pattern, and modelling the profit of a business,” he said.

Clodagh Sweeney, Higher Level Leaving Cert Maths Student at Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone felt the paper was tough in parts.

“Overall, I found the paper quite challenging. In particular, the A part of the Financial Maths seemed like a tough introduction to that question.”

Eamonn Kilgannon, Higher Level, Leaving Cert Maths Student at Jesus and Mary Secondary School also found the maths paper 1 difficult.

“It was definitely a tough paper, where I was challenged for time getting everything done”.
