Crowds expected for 3 day visit of St. Teresa Relic

A first class relic of St Teresa of Calcutta will arrive for a three day visit to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Sligo next Tuesday, June 20th. The event forms part of a national tour of the cathedrals of Ireland.

Great numbers are expected due to the popularity of the former Mother Teresa, who visited Sligo Cathedral in 1996 a year before she died.

St Teresa, who was canonised last year, was born in Skopje, now the Republic of Macedonia. At the age of 18 she moved to Ireland and then to India, where she lived for most of her life. In 1950, she founded the Missionari­es of Charity, a religious congregati­on dedicated to the service of ‘ the poorest of the poor’.

In 2000 the Missionari­es of Charity establishe­d a religious house in Temple Street, Sligo at the invitation of Bishop Jones. During the visit there are a number of masses and veneration­s scheduled to take place, including:

Tuesday 20 June 7.30pm: Arrival of the Relic; 8: 00pm Evening Mass with Veneration to follow until 10: 00pm.

Wednesday 21 June 8: 00 am Mass with Veneration to follow; 10: 30am Mass with Veneration to follow until 12 noon; 1: 00pm; Veneration by the sisters of Charity in their convent until 5.00 pm; 7: 00 pm Evening Mass with Veneration to follow until 10: 00pm;

Thursday 23 June 8: 00 am Mass with Veneration to follow; 10: 30am Mass with Veneration to follow until 12 noon; 3: 00 pm, Veneration and 4: 00 pm Departure of the Relic.
