Two half Parishes nestling between the Ox Mountains

SKREEN Dromard is an area of two half parishes nestling between the Ox Mountains and the sea in west Sligo - approxiama­tely 22 kilometers from Sligo as you travel the N59 towards Ballina.

The 2011 census shows 177 people resident in Skreen and 364 in Dromard..

The area first took part in Community Games in 1974, one of the founders being Sr Finbar Martin RIP.

At that time there was a practice of holding a parade around the local area on the day of the athletic finals

Past secretarie­s included Sr Finbar Martin Edward James, Freda Clarke, Helen Kilgallen ( 1990 to 2000) and Carmel Doherty.( 2000 to 2014)

At this time we also reflect on members who are no longer with us, rememberin­g in particular the untimely passing of Conor Brady.

Some significan­t landmarks for the area committee included:

1974: Shemie Reilly competes at National in the U14 100m track event. He competed again in the High Jump in 1976.

2000: Under 11 rugby team is first team from area to compete at National level and they bring home bronze medals. 2001 Area Hosted County AGM: 2001: We are winners of the Most Improved Area award.

2001: Brendan Kilcullen is first competitor to go to national since 1976.

2003: Skreen Dromard are winners of opening parade trophy for best turned out area.

2003: Local committee sets up an athletics sub committee. This marked the foundation of the now well establishe­d athletics club.

2004: Area boundaries realiagned to take in part of Lugawarry.

2004 First national gold medal ( Martin Mc Gloin art)

2004: James Clarke is first competitor from the area to compete in a National track event since 1974.

2008: Emma Keaveney is first National gold medallist in an athletics event. from the area

2015 Jamie O Carroll takes gold in shot putt at the National finals.

2015: Lauren Cadden wins u16 200m at the National finals.

2016 Matthew O Grady is first swimming National gold medallist from the area.

2016: New committee is formed with Dr Helen Fitzsimon as chairperso­n and Liz O Grady as secretary
