BROKEN PROMISE LAND
On Wednesday the 21st of June, the Hawk’s Well Theatre continues its programme of lunchtime theatre with a show at 12.45pm titled Broken Promise Land. Produced by Stone’s Throw Theatre, directed by Aoife Spillane Hinks, the show was written by Mirjana Rendulic who also performs in the play. Based on her own experiences, this piece dispels easy preconceptions about exotic dancers. It follows the story of Stefica, a young girl who, sick of life in her war- torn country and guided by MTV hits and Hollywood sitcoms, takes on a new name and embarks on a quest for an American education, and ends up in a Dublin lap dancing club. With frankness and humour, she teaches us the tricks of the trade - and shares secrets she can’t tell anyone else.
A critically acclaimed production in Dublin, Limerick, Galway, Electric Picnic 2013, Foundation 13 Arts Festival in Tullamore, Offaly and London’s Camden Fringe Festival, play development has been supported by Fishamble: The New Play Company’s New Play Clinic scheme. Director Aoife Spillane- Hinks works in Ireland and the United States. Her American credits include Sharon’s Grave, Waiting for Godot, and Our Class ( PICT Classic Theatre, Pittsburgh). Irish credits include King Lear ( O’Reilly Theatre); Merchant of Venice and Romeo and Juliet ( GSA Shakespeare); As You Like It ( Gaiety School of Acting Performance Theatre Company), The 24 Hour Plays, Dublin.
Broken Promise Land was selected for inclusion on the RTE Drama on One radio series and was awarded silver at New York Radio Festivals 2014.
This play is suitable for ages 16+ and there is minimal adult content.
