Council is to honour Mayor and Freeman
The Council is to honour the late Councillor, Mayor and Freeman Thomas Higgins by naming a street, place or amenity in his memory.
Sligo County Councillors all agreed with Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady’s motion to honour the late politician who started off his career in Sligo Borough Council back in 1967.
“He was a neighbour of mine in Treacy Avenue, himself and his wife Teresa,” she told yesterday’s meeting.
“He was a huge asset to those who lived in Treacy Avenue.
He always gave you encouragement to keep going and served his community and Sligo well,” she said.
Her motion was seconded by Cllr Declan Bree, who described Tommy Higgins as “an exemplary public representative.”
In addition to being a member of the Corporation and being Mayor of Sligo on three occasions - 1970,1974 and 1984 - he was also a member of the Council from 1967- 1991.
The new place names Committee is to consider the matter.
