We were delighted to be part of the first National Finals in 1973
CORNAGEEHA was one of the first areas to get involved in Community Games in Sligo. In 1972 they affiliated to the County and the first area athletic finals took place in Albert Higgins field.
At the time there were approx. 12 very strong committee members who worked tirelessly to ensure that Community Games would be available for all children between the age of 6 and 16 regardless of their ability.
In 1973 a number of competitors from Cornageeha area took part in the very first National Finals to be held in Mosney, Co. Meath. They were: Mary T. Scanlon, Geraldine Scanlon, Eileen Mc Manus, Brian Cleary and Siobhan Gormally. Since then, Cornageeha have been represented at every National final both in team and individual events.
In 2015 Cornageeha & St. Anne’s community games areas amalgamated for a trial period of two years in order to provide for the children of St. Anne’s parish. Over the years numbers had been dwindling despite the efforts of two or three people to keep it going. It has proved a successful endeavour as participation has increased in art, swimming & athletics. Last year there were modern dance teams from the area for the first time ever. There were also two gaelic football teams, 2 indoor soccer teams, 1 outdoor soccer team and a fusball team. This year there was a choir. It is hoped to increase the number of people on the area committee for next year in order to provide opportunities for the young people of the area to enter many more events. If you are interested in helping in a small way, please get in touch with us. Its great fun , the children get so much from it & you will too.
There is a very strong tradition within the area and long may this live on through the involvement of our volunteers who are willing to help keep the area alive.
