Speeding drivers

A number of drivers were fined at Sligo District Court for speeding offences.

Paul Young, 25 Greenfort Estate was fined € 60 for travelling at 95kph in an 80kph zone at Scarden, Strandhill Road on October 1st last.

The defendant told Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor ( defending) that he never received the fixed charge notice. He was a mechanic with a clean driving licence.

Judge Kevin Kilrane said he was satisfied the notice was sent to the defendant’s address. He fined the defendant € 60, a conviction which also attracts five penalty points. Recognisan­ces were fixed in the event of an appeal.

At the same court, Ann Clinton, Mail Coach Road was fined € 60 for travelling at 65kph in a 50kph zone on September 10th last at Cartron. She told the court she intended paying the fine but forgot to pay it in time.

Also at Sligo District Court, Martin Kilgannon, Rathgoonan­e, Dromore West was fined € 100 for travelling at 104kph in a 60kph zone at Abbeytown on October 19th. He told the court he was late for a hospital appointmen­t for his wife.

Judge Kilrane said the speed was very fast.
