Summerville knitters’ Easter chicks a sell out

-

Residents at Summerville Healthcare in Strandhill recently raised € 572 for the Aposlotate workers mission fund.

At the last residents and family meeting a suggestion was made to start a knitting corner in the nursing home.

The seed was sown and before long a knitting company was set up. The aim of the project was to knit “Easter Chicks”, have them filled with Easter eggs and sell them for the missions.

Group one; The knitting group got to work and before long the needles were clicking most of the day, not only with the group but with families, friends and all who came to visit them. Group two; These patterns had to be stitched together, their heads puffed up and eyes and beaks to be created. This needed professional assistance. Nora, the Activities Co- ordinator, was nominated for this dedicated job whose personal skills in creativity proved very satisfactory. Group 3; The chicks then had to be ‘ egged’, counted and made presentable for marketing ( EU Law). Only free ( sponsored) eggs were used. The arrange- ment was made up of multi- coloured chicks, yellow, gold, white, pink and red & white ( for the Sligo Rovers fans). Group 4; Finance Committee. We had to decide on a price. € 3 each or 2 for € 5 – no VAT as we were working for the missions, not for the government. The target was € 300.

“They also sold homemade chocolate chip cookies donated by Summerville kitchen staff. They were sold out at the end of our Easter party on Holy Thursday afternoon.

“Last but no means least – to Mary Gilmartin and all the dedicated staff who believed we could do it. To Eamon Cunningham who sponsored our eggs. To all the families and friends who made generous donations.

“Our total collected was € 572 for the Aposlotate workers mission fund.

“We had great fun knitting, stitching, counting, selling and eating. We are now taking a break and will have another project in the pipe line,” said the group.
