Sligo listed in Vogue as holiday destination

-

WHAT has Sligo got in common with Ibiza, Amalfi, Marbella and Puglia?

All of these destinations were included in a recent Vogue article about where the editors are going on holidays this year.

Scarlett Conlon, the Vogue UK Daily editor, said she will be going to Sligo this summer.

“A favourite with poets and artists for centuries thanks to its sweeping vistas and rich history of literature, Sligo is an Irish county not heard of as often as its Dublin and Galway counterparts, but with the same to offer in the form of unforgettable experiences,” she wrote.

Among the things one must do in Sligo, she listed Voya, Hazelwood Forest, a visit to Hargadon’s and The Model. She recommended eateries such as Montmarte and Pudding Row, and listed Castle Dargan and The Glasshouse as places to stay.

The article continued: “Don’t expect the same designer houses that can be found in the capital Dublin, but do bank on finding boutiques specialising in traditional tweeds and Aran jumpers ( Mullaneys Brothers, O’Connell Street); handmade jewellery ( The Cat and The Moon, Castle Street); hand- crafted ceramics ( Breeogue Pottery, Knocknahur); and plenty of poetry books from local artisanal bookshops ( like Liber Books on O’Connell Street) - it is Yeats’s county after all. All are rich in keepsakes that will remind you fondly of your time on the Emerald Isle,” she added.

Ms. Conlon also said it is ideal for families and romantic breaks.
