Mageean and English among stars for Sligo City Sports

TOMORROW, Wednesday the 21st of June the Sligo IT Knocknarea track will be hosting a showcase athletics event which is not to be missed.

Come along and be part of what will be a brilliant night of inspiring performanc­es and some fun novel events for everyone to partake in.

European medallists Ciara Mageean and Mark English will be competing on the night with both in spectacula­r form at the minute. Mageean only last week qualified for the World Championsh­ips in London at the Diamond League event in Rome.

English is also coming into form this summer and both athletes will be looking to smash records on the night in front of a Sligo crowd.

The Donegal man will be looking to run the fastest track 500m ever recorded – that’s right; a World Record attempt is coming to Sligo.

Meanwhile the superstar from Portaferry, Mageean will be looking to take the Irish 800m record under 2 minutes and become the first Irish athlete to do so.

She’ll be challenged on the night be the current Irish Record Holder Roseanne Galligan.

Pacemakers will be on hand to push the pace and it’ll be a thrilling race with a loaded field of high class middle distance girls.

As at last year’s magical night for Mary Cullen there is also paced 5000m races for all.

So whether your PB is 23 minutes or 15 minutes, come along and jump into a paced fast flat 5000m and be cheered along by the crowd.

The track will be lined with gazebos and the atmosphere will be electric.

Admission is free so bring all the family.

The weather is looking promising but with tents and gazebos lining the track, organiser have got you covered for all eventualit­ies.

The evening will kick off at 4pm with the Schools Relay Program me and all schools are still invited to take part by getting in touch with the organisers Believe and Achieve.

The Open Meet and paced 5000m races will start from 6.30pm and the Elite Program kicks off at 7pm.

Two other novel and exciting events will definitely draw a crowd – Sligo’s Fastest Family will see a thrilling battle between the 8 fastest families in Sligo.

Who will win the coveted title? The finals of Sligo’s Ultimate Athlete will also take place with a handicappe­d 800m race, seeing kids as young as 9 years old racing against adults. The winner will be flown to the World Championsh­ips in London to witness Usain Bolt’s final race as a profession­al athlete – the prize of a lifetime. Last Wednesday 55 competitiv­e athletes aged from 8 to 60+ competed over 4 discipline­s at the IT Track. After 3 hours, the points were calculated using the IAAF Decathlon Tables and there are 12 winners going forward to the handicappe­d final tomorrow.
