Legacy of Paddy Killoran lives on

-

Paddy Killoran’s contribution to Irish music is recalled every year in Ballymote during the festival named in his honour.

Paddy Killoran was a renowned fiddle player who passed away in 1965.

“It’s very important to remember Paddy Killoran and keep up the traditional music and remember his contribution to Irish music,” said Ciaran O’Duibhir, Chairman of the festival committee.

“The festival ensures his memory is maintained and it also gives people a forum to play music when they might not normally have that,” he said.

The festival brings together fans of traditional music, who meet up and spend the weekend enjoying their music. This year’s event took place in Ballymote last weekend.

“There were lots of young people involved and we had great help from all the volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to ensure that the months of planning bore fruit.”

The memorial concert on Saturday night was one of the highlights of the festival, along with numerous sessions and events throughout the weekend.

A few musicians and singers went to the local nursing home which was a really nice gesture.

There was a singing session on Sunday afternoon and a teenagers’ music session in Doddy’s then. Then there was a really nice music session after the concert.

It sounds like the fleadh on a smaller scale. It’s always over in a blast after all the months of work. The people there were all stars in their own right.
