No tunnel found under Courthouse

- BY Paul Deering

IT’S been a long standing tale of Sligo folklore that there was a tunnel leading from Sligo Courthouse to either the former county jail at Riverside or across the road to the Garda Station.

Evidence of its existence has always been thin on the ground but with major road works underway in the area for the past week or so it can now be confirmed that no tunnel has been found at Teeling Street.

Major water and sewer works are currently underway by Irish Water who were asked if their workers had come across a tunnel.

A spokeswoman said: “The contractors have reported that no tunnel or signs of a tunnel were found when excavating across the line from the courthouse to the Garda station.” Looks like the tale of the tunnel can be assigned the label of fable.
