Normal service resumes at Sligo Library from this week
CONFIRMATION that the Sligo Central Library is to resume normal opening hours from today ( Tuesday 27th) has been welcomed.
Sinn Féin Councillor Chris MacManus was among those who expressed his delight at the move. He said: “As a regular user of our library service, I like many others was annoyed and angry when the libraries in County Sligo had to shut their doors on a rotating basis last Autumn due to staff shortages.
“Thanks to the campaigning of library users throughout the region and the local media against these cutbacks some common sense was applied and funding identified to hire new staff to allow our libraries to maintain a full service.
“While Ballymote and Tubbercurry returned to full service earlier this year, Sligo Central Library continued a week on- week off policy regarding public access.
The Council have now confirmed that from this Tuesday, 27th June, the Central Library will resume a full service. This is most welcome.”
He concluded: “I’ve always said libraries are not a luxury, they are a necessity.
“Regardless of location or household income every citizen should have access to decent library services.
Any diminishing of such services is effectively saying to some youngsters, they are second- class.
One of my priorities as a public representative is to ensure that no child is left behind and that means an excellent library service.”
