STRANDHILL

ON Saturday we celebrated Leo McNally’s Captain’s Day, this was testament to the popularity of Leo, The leading qualifier’s score after 18 holes was a brilliant 65 from Peter McDonnell from Colm Brennan and Patsy Gallagher on 66. The final nine hole playoff started at 6: 15pm and the outcome was in the balance for some time however Robbie Henneberry played excellent golf over the closing holes including a fantastic birdie on the 16th hole to win the coveted Captains prize for 2017. Robbie in his speech was very complimentary of Captain Leo’s prize, the organisation on the day and the course staff. This was his first win in the Captains Prize but one suspects it may not be his last playing off an 8 handicap, well done Robbie. The Captain’s dinner was the highlight of the evening and was celebrated by Leo’s friends and family and club members. Vice- Captain Hugh Gallagher led the tributes to Leo and his work with Strandhill Golf Club and is summarised best in describing Leo as one of life’s true gentlemen. The dinner was followed by the presentation of prizes to the winners and the dancing and craic continued long into the “wee” hours. Congratulations Leo on a wonderful day and best wishes for the remainder of the year. On Sunday 2nd July the Midsummer Summer Team of 4 Classic Fundraiser is taking place.
