DRUMCLIFFE/ ROSSES POINT

FÉILE U14 Boys Footballers PRIDE of place goes to the boys U14 footballers who, as part of a combined team with neighbours St Molaise Gaels, won the All- Ireland Féile Peile na nÓg Regional Plate title last Saturday with impressive wins over Salthhill- Knocknacarra ( Galway) and Four Masters ( Donegal). The team comprised 12 players from Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point and 12 from St Molaise Gaels. We were hosts to the Douglas GAA Club from Co Cork. The team had lost both group matches in Oxfield earlier on Saturday against Douglas and Corofin but gelled quickly as the day wore on and grew in statue with every game in the knockout stages, played at Scarden. Huge thanks go to our organiser Jimmy O’Brien and our band of parents and volunteers who were all terrific hosts. A special word too for our pitch committee, car park stewards and helpers who had Oxfield looking so well for this memorable event. The Féile panel of players was: Ruairi Carroll, Augustine Watters, Ewan Rippon, Hugh Keaney, Mark Herrity, John Herrity, Josh Brady, Ciarán O’Reilly ( joint Capt), Luke Casserly ( joint Capt), Cian Oates, Ciarán Smith, Jack McGovern, Paul O’Brien, Seán Keane, James Donlon, Eoin Kerrigan, James McDermott, Daniel O’Connor, Keelan Harte, Evan Ballantine, Desmond Gillen, Ronan McGowan, Darragh Hallisey, Adam O’Boyle. The success more than made up for the U14 footballers’ league semi- final defeat last Monday evening against an impressive Ballymote/ Bunninadden team who were deserving winners on the day. Our girls U14 footballers travel to Hazelwood this Wednesday evening to face Calry/ St Joseph’s in their league semi- final at 7 o’clock. It’s a big week for the Sligo ladies football team as they take on Leitrim in the Connacht Intermediate championship this Sunday af- ternoon in McHale Park, Castlebar at 2: 30pm. The club wishes Sinéad Regan, Michelle McNamara and Rachel Monaghan the very best of luck. There will be live coverage of the match on Ocean FM. Good luck to our senior club captain Neil Ewing who leads Sligo out against Meath in Round 2A of the All- Ireland football qualifiers in Navan this Saturday evening. The senior men’s footballers completed their Kiernan Cup campaign last Sunday with a narrow one- point defeat, 3- 9 to 2- 13 at home to St Mary’s. Both teams were without their county contingent. The seniors next game is an important Division 1 league match away to Eastern Harps in three weeks time. We want to acknowledge the efforts of Benbulben Gaels hurler Patrick O’Connor who came very close to winning the Sligo GAA U16 Poc Fada competition on Knocknarea mountain last Friday night. Patrick acquitted himself admirably before losing out narrowly Easkey’s Fionn Moylan on a ‘ Poc- Off’.

CALRY/ ST JOSEPH’S

PRIDE of place this week goes to both Féile teams who competed in the National Finals of the competition at the weekend. Both teams played admirably but unfortunately went out at the quarter- final for the boys and semi final stages for the girls. Massive congratulations to both the players and the coaches on being part of such a memorable event. You have done your Club and County proud, and we hope the good experience will live long in your memories. The club plays host to a number of neighbouring clubs is on Saturday morning next as we host a blitz for the under 8 and under 10 girls. We look forward to large numbers and would appreciate any help. The Blitz starts at 10 AM. The junior team had a narrow loss to near neighbours Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point while the hurlers had a good win in the first round of the Championship against Tubbercurry. The very best of luck to Sligo as they take on Meath this weekend.

We extend our sympathies to Fr Noel Rooney on the death of his father Bart. Go ndeanfaidh Dia trocaire ar a Anam uasail.

COOLERA/ STRANDHILL

THERE was no winner of the lotto on Monday June 19th. The numbers drawn were 2, 6, 12, and 27. Tickets are available from Keane’s Supermarket, Bree’s Bar, Margaret’s Café and also from Joe Gildea. The draw takes place every Monday in the clubhouse. OUR U12 Div 1 team returned to winning ways with a well- earned victory over St Johns in Ransboro Park recently. The under 12 girls made their exit from the league when they were defeated by Shamrock Gaels in the quarter final. In a game that could have gone either way, the girls were unlucky to concede late in the match and went down on a score line of 2- 05 to 1- 13. Our Division 4 team made the short trip to Connolly Park, Collooney on Friday evening for round six of the league. Despite putting up a good show they were to lose 2- 15 to 1- 11 and now lie mid- table with three wins and three losses. They play Calry/ St. Joseph’s on Saturday in Ransboro at 12.00. A place in the Shield Final was the prize that awaited the winner of our recent match with Tubbercurry and it was the south Sligo side that prevailed 4- 07 to 1- 12 in a close encounter. The Championship is next up in 3 weeks time and we can look forward to it with plenty of optimism based on the obvious improvements to be seen in recent games. The U12’ s were beaten by a stonger and older Naomh Eoin team on Tuesday last and find themselves in Group B for the play offs alongside Tubbercurry and Tourlestrane. They also played St. Mary’s, Carrick- on- Shannon in a friendly on Saturday and put up a strong display. Our U 8/ 10’ s have a blitz in the Sligo Centre of Excellence on Wednesday night at 6.30pm. Online registration is now open for our Cúl Camp which will be held at Scarden from July 3rd- 7th. On Sunday Laura- Ann Laffey, Ruth Goodwin and Jacqui Mulligan travel to Castlebar with Sligo LGFA to play Leitrim in the Connacht Intermediate Championship Final.

Our Club hosted the Boys and Management Team from the great Austin Stacks club in Kerry for the weekend. Sincere thanks is due to so many people in our Club for making the weekend such a success. Those who hosted families, supervised groups over the weekend, provided food, looked after carparking, our young players who mixed so well with their Kerry counterparts, our Club and Bord na nOg Officers, U14 Management team and many others. A great example of so many people working together for the benefit of the club. Thank you to all involved. Thanks also to our visitors from Kerry who were a pleasure to host and entertain for the weekend. Their young Players in particular were a credit to their Families and Club on and off the pitch. The visitors were impressive and convincing winners when the sides met in the League at the same venue a number of weeks ago. However the Damien Kelly and Oisin Coyne managed home squad will relish the opportunity of reaching a senior final and a good game is in prospect. We hope to see a big home crowd on Sunday in support of the squad. Our next Club Lotto Draw take place this Monday June 10th at 8.30pm. Thank you to everyone for their continued support for this important fundraiser. Our annual “Cash for Clobber” fundraiser coincides with the return of underage coaching. This was a bonus draw and is in addition to all the other monthly draws. The prize on offer was a hedge trimmer sponsored by East Brothers in association with Gardencare. Due to the enormous amount of raffle tickets sold so far in this fundraiser a rather novel idea was used in conducting the draw. All tickets were put into a cement mixer and mixed under the supervision of Joe Simon who kindly volunteered to oversee the draw. Congratulations to Adrian Gorman from Bunninadden who was the winner and the ticket was sold by Louis Carty.
