May they rest in peace.
PARISH HISTORY PROJECT
The last meeting of the Curry Parish History Project ( CPHP) was held on Tuesday, May 30; a large gathering of members and guests were welcomed to St Mary’s Community Hall, Curry.
Ciaran Brett spoke on the Cooke family of Clooningan, listing four generations of his ancestors many of whom had emigrated. He explained the wide range of source material and methods he used when researching the genealogy of his mother’s ( Josie Cooke NT) family. Ciaran with his team plans to deliver an in- depth presentation on the history of the Clooningan/ Cloonrane townland at a future meeting.
Séamus Durcan detailed the lives and times of four generations of his family who had lived in the family home in Bunnacranagh. His father Frank Durcan RIP ( 1905- 1981) was well known for his work as a supervisor with Sligo Count Council.
Tommie Grady assisted by Maura Talbot- Kilroy delivered the main presentation of the Night, ‘ Rathmagurry its Geography, History and Folklore’. Topics covered vividly and with humour included, land division, dramatic changes in farming practice, architecture: placement in the landscape and orientation of houses and farm buildings ( most houses faced east), families of the townland, emigration and population trends, the local economy through time, happy social interaction and cooperation between the different religious denominations, a celebrated victory by the hobnail- shod village gaelic football team, home entertainment/ rambling and farm evictions.
The next meeting will feature a talk by John Normanly and his team on the townland of Ballincurry, taking place at St Mary’s Hall, Curry, on Tuesday, June 27, at 8 p. m.
