Work begins on set down area at school

Work to improve traffic management at Holy Family National School in Tubbercurry has begun after years of campaigning from locals and public representatives.

Councillor Jerry Lundy, who has raised the issue with Sligo County Council numerous times, says this work is vital.

“That work is ongoing now, we’re delighted it’s started,” he told The Sligo Champion.

“It’s very important that it’s started. I’ve been requesting that this work be carried out since 2004/ 2005.”

Holy Family NS is located on the Ballymote Road, and with nowhere for parents to drop off their children safely, it has become a dangerous road, and causes traffic jams everyday.

“The site is out the Ballymote road, it’s a regional road but it’s very busy. So many times, in the morning and afternoons there are kids being picked up and dropped off and it’s just mayhem,” added Cllr. Lundy.

The land was previously owned by the HSE and was part of a swap between the HSE and the council, before being transferred for use by the school.

“The land belonged to the HSE and that was swapped with the council for a site beside the hospital,” explained Cllr. Lundy.

He continued: “It was then transferred to the Diocesan Trust. It will be used as a set down location. It’s great news for the children and for the parents and road users in the area.”

Locals were also concerned about traffic jams in the case of an emergency.

“Another thing, during those very busy hours if a fire brigade or ambulance or doctor was trying to get through in the case of an emergency they could lose some vital moments. I’m so delighted that at long last this work is being done,” he said.
