Curry parish history is recalled as part of group project

The Curry Parish History Project will meet this evening, Tuesday June 27th, at St. Mary’s Hall in Curry at 8pm.

The group’s last meeting was held on Tuesday May 30th.

A large gathering of members and guests were welcomed to St Mary` s Community Hall, Curry.

Ciaran Brett spoke about the Cooke family of Clooningan, listing four generation­s of his ancestors - many of whom had emigrated.

He explained the wide range of source material and methods he used when researchin­g the genealogy of his mother’s ( Josie Cooke NT) family.

Ciaran with his team plans to deliver an in- depth presentati­on on the history of the Clooningan/ Cloonrane townland at a future meeting.

Seamus Durcan detailed the lives and times of four generation­s of his family who had lived in the family home in Bunnacrana­gh.

His father Frank Durcan RIP ( 1905- 1981) was well known for his work as a supervisor with Sligo Count Council.

Tommie Grady assisted by Maura Talbot- Kilroy delivered the main presentati­on of the Night, “Rathmagurr­y its Geography, History and Folklore”.

Topics covered vividly and with humour included, land division, dramatic changes in farming practice, architectu­re:- placement in the landscape and orientatio­n of houses and farm buildings ( most houses faced east), families of the townland, emigration and population trends, the local economy through time, happy social interactio­n and cooperatio­n between the different religious denominati­ons, a celebrated victory by the hobnail- shod village gaelic football team, home entertainm­ent/ rambling and farm evictions.

The next meeting will feature a talk by John Normanly and his team on the townland of Ballincurr­y.
