Calling Sligo scouts of 50 years ago for a jubilee reunion

- By JENNY MCCUDDEN

DO you recognise any of the boys in this picture or indeed were you one of this Sligo Scout Troop bound for camp in Waterford 50 years ago this month?

Scout leader Joe Doherty was among the lads who travelled to Lismore for a 12 day camp that ran from the 12 th to the 24 th July in 1967. He is now looking to organise a 50 year reunion with his former fellow scouts.

He explains: “50 years ago 18 scouts from the 2nd Sligo Scout Troop travelled to the first international camp organised by the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland.

“The camp was known as Lismore ‘67 and included 4,000 scouts from all over Ireland along with some boys from France.”

Joe recalls it was a wonderful occasion for everyone involved. “We enjoyed 12 days of scout activities, meeting and mixing with other scouts was an experience in itself,” he says.

Joe, who is still actively involved with the scouts and about to return to camp this month, believes that a reunion would be lovely given the 50 years that it has been since the trip.

He says: “There are some well known Sligo men in this group including, Andy Kilfeather, Noel Moran, Brian Gillen, John Fahy, Tony Fox, Rapheal Rooney, Cyril O’Hara and Peter Kavanagh.

“Sadly some of the group have passed away,” says Joe, “But we would like those who recognise themselves in the photo to please get in touch for a reunion. They can contact me at joebscout@ gmail.com.”
