Sligo walkway is fully restored after fire damage
THE fire damaged section of the Sligo Way has been fully restored just in time for the Sligo Camino which took place over the weekend.
The recent forestry and gorse fires caused significant damage, including the destruction of the iconic Sligo Way raised wooden boardwalk between Slish Wood and the Lake Isle of Innisfree. The Department acknowledged the urgency of the situation and approved funding of €54, 000.
Sligo County Council staff and contractors worked tirelessly to ensure the trail was successfully repaired within the very tight time-frame. The support and goodwill of Coillte and the local landowners was crucial to the success of the project.
The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Seamus Kilgannon paid tribute to the people involved in restoring this vital amenity.
He said: “This walkway is one of Sligo’s many gems, and I would encourage people to visit this and enjoy this wonderful resource on our door-step.
“We are blessed with the stunning beauty of our county, take the opportunity to explore one of our many scenic trails and walkways and experience what Sligo has to offer.”
