Jailed taxi driver trying to get licence restored

A man jailed for drugs offences is attempting to get his taxi licence back, Sligo District Court was told.

Father of four Tom Gethins (54) of Garavogue Villas was jailed for three years last November after being caught with €19,212 worth of cocaine and cannabis after his taxi was stopped by gardaí on October 6 th 2015. The drugs were found in his trouser pockets while deals of cocaine were located in the taxi. More drugs were later found at a shed at his house, cannabis worth €656 and cocaine valued at €1,703.

Gethins, a former County Council outdoor staff member, who also operated a taxi for 12 years had pleaded guilty.

Last Thursday, Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor told Judge Kevin Kilrane that Gethins was contesting a decision of the taxi regulator to revoke his licence.

The matter was listed for hearing at Sligo District Court today (Tuesday).

Gethins was not in court last Thursday and a body warrant was issued by the Judge to allow for his attendance today.
